When we look at California’s median home equity—currently at $550K—alongside a median household net worth of $273.8K (after factoring in debts and non-housing assets), it’s clear just how much of our wealth is concentrated in our homes. As a mortgage professional, I see every day how high property values can boost net worth on paper, while also making liquid assets harder to come by. This means many homeowners are equity-rich but may have less flexibility for other financial goals.
Understanding how much of your wealth is tied up in your home is the first step in making informed decisions—whether you’re considering refinancing, downsizing, or diversifying your broader financial picture. California’s strong equity position is both an opportunity and a reminder to approach your next move strategically. My focus is always on helping clients see the full picture so they can make confident, empowered choices about their financial future.
